岸城神社(Kishiki Shrine)

Cultural heritage

Kishiki Shrine is located on the east side of the Kishiwada Castle castle tower, and is the guardian deity of the castle and the sacred place of the Kishiwada Danjiri Festival.

Originally, it is said that local farmers built a Shinto shrine to pray for a good harvest, but about 650 years ago, they solicited Susano Mikoto from Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto. Since then, it has been called Gozu Tenno Shrine and has prospered as a local guardian deity.

Later, during the Keicho era, Hideyoshi’s vassal Hidemasa Koide enshrined Yawata Ogami when he renovated Kishiwada Castle, and since then it has been deeply worshiped by the castle owners and residents.

In the Meiji Restoration, the shrine became widespread and was renamed to “Kishiki Shrine”. In August 2008, the current shrine was completed with the support of worshipers of the shrine.

Since Kishiwada Castle was called Chikirijo, many worshipers are the god of marriage.

The famous Kishiwada Danjiri Festival is an annual festival of this company.
