Ise Katagami Shiryokan(伊勢型紙資料館:Ise Paper Museum)

Tourist attractions

The paper pattern materials are stored and exhibited in the house of the Terao Saibei family, which was one of the leading paper pattern wholesalers.

History

The Terao family house is a restored house of the Terao Saibei family, which was one of the best paper pattern wholesalers in the late Edo period, and was designated as a city historic site as a paper pattern-related merchant house and as a representative example of machiya architecture. It opened in 1997.

The Terao family has been producing and selling Ise Katagami since the Edo period, and the peddling range extends from the Tohoku region to the entire Kanto region.

This historic building was donated by Mr. Shoichi Terao.

Traditional craftsman

“Technology for carving patterns” has been designated as an important intangible cultural property by the country.

And the bearer of the technology is “Important Intangible Cultural Property Holding Organization Ise Katagami Technology Preservation Society”.

When a certain technology is designated as an important intangible cultural property by the government, the bearer of the technology is individually recognized as an “important intangible cultural property holder”, or a group of people with the technology is designated as an “important intangible cultural property holding organization”. Will be certified as.

The so-called “Living National Treasure” is when an individual is certified.

The “Ise Katagami Technology Preservation Society”, which was organized to hand down the technology of Ise Katagami, was certified as a “holding organization” in 1993 as a group of people with technology equivalent to a “national treasure”.

While the Traditional Industry Center was built in recent years for the purpose of passing on excellent industries to posterity, the Ise Paper Museum also displays materials for its production and handing down activities, making use of its cultural heritage. I am.

About Ise Katagami

Exhibited works

In the exhibition of works, the title is attached to the display of the creator.

It is a position in the “Important Intangible Cultural Property Holding Organization”.

Those who are training are called “trainees”.

It takes five years to get out of there and become a “trainee”. After five years, I am finally in a position to get a job.

By the way, there are four main techniques for carving patterns, and they are used properly according to the characteristics of the design, but it takes five years to get rid of the “trainee” for one of the techniques.

Inevitably, most craftsmen will specialize in almost one technique.

Nevertheless, it takes decades of continuous study to become a formal “member” of the “Preservation Society”.

Moreover, in order to maintain that position, the technology must be examined every year and new works must be submitted.

If you do not pass the examination, you will be forced to choose between withdrawal (retirement) and demotion.

Studying will continue forever.

It was said that some craftsmen do not have a TV at home and the whole family lives without a TV in order to maintain their eyesight to carve fine designs.

Mr. Uchida, Chairman of the “Ise Katagami” Technology Preservation Society, told me that “the qualification to be a bearer of important intangible cultural properties is so strict.”

The attitude of involving the family, studying, and being tested is reminiscent of the world of top athletes, such as professional athletes who renew their contracts every year.

Even the president submits his work every year and is judged.

Exhibited at this museum are all the works that have passed such an examination.

Normally, shooting is prohibited, but I took a special shot for the interview.

However, the photographs barely convey this beauty and unique taste.

Please take a look at the exhibition directly.

If you are lucky, you can directly observe the work of the craftsmen.
