The first official temple of Japanese Buddhism

Shitennoji, the head temple of the Japanese sect, is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Japan.

In the first year of Empress Suiko (593) 1400 years ago, Prince Shotoku vowed to the four heavenly kings to save all the people of the world, and it was the first official temple of Japanese Buddhism built to create a peaceful country.

In the precincts, you can see the Shitennoji style sangharama arrangement, which is one of the oldest architectural styles in Japan. The building faithfully reproduces the style of the Asuka period when it was first built.

There are many attractions such as “Rokutoki Reisan-do”, which holds many national treasures and important cultural properties such as items from the time of its foundation, and “Gokuraku Jodo no Niwa”, which is a famous place for cherry blossoms.

A fair is held on the 21st (Daishikai) and 22nd (Taishikai) of every month, and many stalls including antiques are lined up in the precincts as well as the memorial service, and a large number of worshipers visit.

Every evening, a candle with the spiritual names of about 10,000 ancestors is lit, and a monk parades through the temple in time with the Heart Sutra. This spectacle reflected in the dusk makes you feel a mysterious and mysterious beauty.
